"THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW"

1.) Who are Bryon & Mark?
Bryon & Mark were bestfriend who were like brothers and even lived together with Bryon's mom.

2.) Who are the two young people Bryon Meets at the hospital?
The two young people Bryon met at the hospital were Mike, a patient and Cathy, who worked in the hospital snack bar.

3.) What kind of relationship does Bryon have with Charlie?
Bryon's relationship with Charlie is like that of an older brother. He admires and respects Charlie and he looks up to him. He sees Charlie as a business man. Bryon is also afraid of Charlie because he is tough & honest.

4.) What happen at the dance?
At the dance Mark is knocked unconscious. Mark stepped in the middle of a fight to stick up for Curtis, he was hit in the head with beer bottle. The guy who hit him with the beer bottle was after Curtis. Angela Shepard had put the boy up to attacking Curtis for ignoring her.

5.) What does Bryon begin to discover in his private conversations with Mark?
Bryon begins to notice that Mark has no conscience. Mark did not care about Charlie was killed protecting Bryon & Mark. Mark & Bryon had hustled two Texans at pool. The Texans were angry and has Bryon & Mark cornered in the alley with gun and brass knuckles. Charlie came to their aid with a sawed-off shotguns. The Texans fired their gun killing Charlie.

6.) What happened to Charlie? How do Bryon & Mark feel about it?
Bryon felt guilty about Charlie's death. Charlie had warned them not to hustle, they ignored him and had angered the Texans. Bryon knows that Charlie saved them from the Texans and lost his life. Charlie should have been set for life, he had avoided the draft and he had his business, the bar. Because of them, Charlie lost everything. Mark feels it was no big deal. Charlie was aware fo the risk of helping them. Mark felt that things happen, that's all there is to it.

7.) What do Mark & Cathy think of each other?
Mark & Cathy do not like each other. Mark is jealous of Cathy. Cathy does not approve of Mark.

8.) What does Mark do to Angel? Why?
Mark had Angel drinking rum until she passed out. Once she was unconscous Mark cut all her long blue-black hair off. The he dumped her and her hair cut off hair in her front yard. Mark did it to get even with her for setting up Curtis at the dance where Mark was knocked unconscous by a beer bottle.

9.) In chapter seven, what does Bryon begin to discover about his good friend Mark?
Bryon realized that bad experiences have no effect on Mark. He realized that Mark didn't care for anyone except Mark.

10.) What happen to Bryon at Terry Jones' house? How does his attitude change?
Angel's two brothers and two other guys showed up at Terry Jones' house while Bryon was sitting outside alone and beat him until he passed out. It changed Bryon's attitude because he realized if Mark got even with the Shepard it would only keep the violence going on in a circle.

11.) In chapter nince, what happens to M&M? Why does this move Bryon?
In chapter nine, M&M acid and has a bad trip. He was hallucinating and babbling nonsense. This moved Bryon because he always thought M&M had an innocent and sweet look and now he just had a look of suspicion on his face.

12.) What shocking discovery does Bryon make in Mark's bedroom (Chapter 10)? What does he do?
Bryon discovered a long cylinder filled with hundreds of pills under Mark's mattress. Bryon realized that Mark was selling drugs. Bryon called the police and turned Mark in.

13.) How does Bryon's relationship with his friends and his attitude toward life completely change?
Bryon's relationship with his friends virtually ended. He stopped hanging out with his friends, he stopped calling and seeing Cathy, he testified against Mark. Bryon seemed to become numb and acted as though he was on auto pilot to get through each way.

14.) How does Bryon feel at the end of the book?
At the end of book Bryon doesn't seem to care about anything anymore. He is worn out with caring about people. He feel he is no longer a kid and wishes he still was because things seemed so much easier them.

15.) What do you think about this book and what life message does it teach?
I think the book was okay. It was older and a little bit difficult to relate to. The life message would be if you do something wrong there will be consequences for your actions.
